I know it is too late but I did not get time to post my already written article on the match played between Sri Lanka and New Zealand. So here is my article which I wrote after the match.
It will be remembered for a long time in Sri Lanka. What a great win by the home team in present Compaq Cup, triangular series. There are so many moments and performances which have to be remembered. How the Winning team collapsed? How a partnership made a fighting total.
It was over all a very good match and which had great show of temperament and commitment. The temperament and commit showed by the two batsmen of Sri Lanka, Samarweera and Mathews, both scored 104 and 51 respectively.
When the match started the comeback man, Shane Bond gave his best shot and bagged two wickets with Tuffey. And they both shared 3 wickets. After them it was Butler who broke the backbone of home team and took important wicket of Captain Kumar Sangakkara. Kandambi also gave away his wicket very early and the Sri Lankan team was looking under pressure. Then Samarweera and Mathews took the charge and slowly and steadily took their team away from the pressure and made a great 100 run partnership.
Samarweera have become one of the oldest batsmen who scored century. He was at 32 years and 351 days old when he scored his maiden century. Sri Lanka scored 216 runs, a respected total.
In the response the New Zealand team struggled from the start and never came out of the pressure put by Lankan bowlers Kulasekara and Thushara. Elliot presented some courage but he did not get any partner to score a big total. And the visitors bowled out for just 119 runs, which is far below their status.
